Upon arrival at Momella Gate, your guides will complete all park entry and registration formalities while you prepare for the trek to Miriakamba Hut. Along the trail, you may encounter a variety of wildlife including warthogs, zebras, monkeys, antelopes, and occasionally elephants, making this section of the journey especially memorable.
A hot lunch will be served after reaching Miriakamba Hut, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings or take some time to explore the nearby area.
Please note that this is your first day at higher altitude, so proper acclimatization is very important. To help your body adjust, it is highly recommended to drink more than 4 liters of bottled water throughout the day in small, frequent amounts. Many climbers also choose to take preventive altitude medication before beginning the ascent to help minimize symptoms of altitude sickness. Our team will provide detailed guidance before your trek, and we strongly advise consulting your doctor in advance regarding any medical concerns or allergies.
During the night, you may begin to feel mild effects of the altitude. Because breathing patterns naturally slow during sleep, the body receives less oxygen than during the day, which can sometimes lead to headaches or slight discomfort. It is important to monitor how you feel and immediately inform your guide if you experience any symptoms related to altitude sickness.
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
After breakfast, the trek continues toward Saddle Hut through the upper slopes of Mount Meru. As you gain altitude, the dense rainforest gradually fades, giving way to beautiful heath and moorland landscapes dotted with giant trees and unique alpine vegetation. Along the route, the trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness and distant peaks.
Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, climbers who still feel strong and energetic may take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru Peak. This short ascent not only rewards you with spectacular views but also helps your body adjust more effectively to the increasing altitude.
A hot lunch and dinner will be prepared and served at the camp, allowing you time to rest and prepare for the next stage of the climb.
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 8 km (4.9 miles)
Around midnight, the group will begin the final ascent to the summit of Mount Meru. This is the most challenging stage of the trek, requiring determination and endurance, especially on the steep and narrow sections leading to Rhino Point and Cobra Point. Extra caution is necessary throughout the climb.
By sunrise, the group will reach Meru Peak at 4,565 meters (14,977 feet), where climbers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views and an unforgettable sunrise above the clouds. From the summit, you may enjoy spectacular vistas of the surrounding landscapes and even glimpse Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance on a clear morning.
After spending some time at the summit, the descent continues back to Miriakamba Hut, where a hot lunch, dinner, and overnight rest await the group after this demanding but highly rewarding day on the mountain.
