Once climbing permits are secured and you’ve registered with the search and rescue service, the group will begin the trek to Machame Camp. The route takes you through lush rainforest, where tropical showers are common, so it’s advisable to bring spare clothes and a raincoat.

➔Important Tips for Day 1:

  • Hydration: Drink over 4 liters of water daily, in small, frequent sips.
  • Altitude Acclimatization: To reduce symptoms of altitude sickness, consider taking preventive medication. Many climbers take these pills in the morning before the trek begins. Consult your doctor about any health concerns, including allergies.
  • Altitude Sickness Awareness: As you ascend, you may feel discomfort from altitude changes, including headaches and nausea. These symptoms are common, but if you feel unwell, alert your guide immediately.

➔Trekking Details:

     Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
     Distance: 5 km

➔ Main Destination: Kilimanjaro National Park

After breakfast, you’ll begin your trek toward Shira Camp, ascending from the rainforest into the open landscapes of the Shira Plateau, where you’ll be treated to your first panoramic views of the stunning terrain. Although the trek is not particularly difficult, the altitude changes may be noticeable, so it’s important to maintain a steady pace and listen to your body.

Upon reaching Shira Camp, you’ll enjoy lunch and some rest. Later, the group will embark on an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp, gaining 400 m (1,312 ft) in elevation. This hike is a gentle ascent designed to aid in the acclimatization process. Once back at Shira Camp, a hot dinner will be served.

➔Important Notes on Acclimatization:

The acclimatization hike is essential for adjusting to higher altitudes and minimizing the risks of altitude sickness. These hikes improve your chances of summiting Kilimanjaro and should be taken seriously.

After breakfast, you’ll depart from Shira Camp and begin your trek towards one of the route’s key points: Lava Tower (4,600 m / 15,088 ft). This section of the trail involves several ascents and descents, ultimately bringing you to a camp situated at over 4,600 m. While this part of the trek may be challenging, it’s essential for acclimatization, so you’ll spend 1–2 hours at Lava Tower to help your body adjust to the altitude. Lunch will be served at the top to allow time for rest.

After lunch, you will descend to Barranco Camp, where you’ll be greeted by the iconic Barranco Wall—a massive and steep rock face. The climb up the Barranco Wall is scheduled for the following day, but don’t worry, as it’s not as intimidating as it looks and has a simple hiking trail.

The hike up the wall itself is relatively easy and takes around an hour. Once at the top, you’ll have a chance to rest and take photos, with a stunning view of the Kibo volcano.

Following the Barranco Wall, you’ll embark on a more challenging section to Karanga Camp, characterized by several ascents and descents. Don’t worry, as your guides will ensure the group maintains an optimal pace. Upon reaching Karanga Camp, you’ll enjoy a warm lunch before continuing on to Barafu Camp.
