16-Day Tanzania Adventure: Mount Meru, Kilimanjaro & Safari

Overview

Experience an extraordinary 16-day Tanzanian adventure combining the challenge of Mount Meru, the iconic ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, and an unforgettable 3-day wildlife safari. From your arrival in Tanzania to your departure, this journey combines mountain trekking, spectacular landscapes, local expertise and world-class wildlife.

Itinerary

Day 1-Arrival In Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. After check-in, take time to relax and recover from your journey. Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy a relaxed evening in Arusha while preparing for your Mount Meru adventure.

After breakfast, drive from Arusha to Arusha National Park and continue to the Mount Meru Gate. After completing registration and meeting your mountain crew, begin your trek through the beautiful montane forest.

The trail gradually climbs through lush vegetation, where you may encounter monkeys and a variety of bird species. Continue toward Miriakamba Hut, your first mountain camp, where you will have dinner and rest for the night.

Elevation: Approximately 1,500 m to 2,514 m
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the forest toward the Mount Meru Gate. Enjoy the final views of Arusha National Park as you make your way down the mountain.

At the gate, complete the necessary procedures and meet your driver for the transfer back to Arusha. After several days on Mount Meru, enjoy a comfortable evening at your hotel and prepare for the next stage of your adventure Mount Kilimanjaro.

After breakfast, continue your ascent toward Saddle Hut. The trail becomes steeper as you climb through the forest and into higher vegetation zones.

As you gain altitude, the vegetation changes and the views become increasingly impressive. Upon reaching Saddle Hut, settle in and enjoy the mountain surroundings. If conditions and energy levels allow, you may take an optional short hike toward Little Meru for additional acclimatization and spectacular views.

Elevation: Approximately 2,514 m to 3,570 m
Overnight: Saddle Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, continue your ascent toward Saddle Hut. The trail becomes steeper as you climb through the forest and into higher vegetation zones.

Today is an important acclimatization day. After breakfast, continue across the high-altitude landscape toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,630 metres.

The climb allows your body to experience a higher elevation before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps with acclimatization.

After reaching Lava Tower, descend toward the impressive Barranco Valley. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with towering volcanic formations surrounding the trail.

Elevation: 3,840 m to 4,630 m, descending to approximately 3,950 m
Trekking: Approximately 6–8 hours
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, drive to the Machame Gate, where you will complete registration and meet your mountain crew. Begin your Kilimanjaro trek through the lush rainforest.

The trail winds through dense vegetation as you gradually gain altitude. Keep an eye out for birds and monkeys along the way. After several hours of trekking, arrive at Machame Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your camp.

After breakfast, depart Arusha and drive towards Tarangire National Park, one of Tanzania’s most scenic wildlife destinations. The park is famous for its enormous baobab trees, seasonal swamps, and large concentrations of elephants.

Upon entering the park, begin your first game drive, exploring its diverse landscapes in search of elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, lions, and other wildlife. During the dry season, the Tarangire River attracts large numbers of animals, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Enjoy a full day surrounded by the beauty of the Tanzanian wilderness before settling into your lodge or luxury camp for the evening.

Today is dedicated entirely to exploring the Serengeti. Set out after breakfast for a full-day game drive across the endless plains, searching for the park’s extraordinary variety of wildlife.

Depending on the season and location of the herds, your guide will take you to areas offering the best opportunities for wildlife viewing. Expect encounters with elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, and numerous bird species. The Serengeti is also home to Africa’s great predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the wilderness before continuing your exploration. Return to camp in the evening and relax beneath the African sky.
