The journey from Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp is a scenic part of the Kilimanjaro trek, especially along the Lemosho Route. Starting at Londorossi Gate, located on the western side of Kilimanjaro, trekkers enter the lush rainforest zone, surrounded by towering trees and vibrant vegetation. The trail gradually ascends to Mti Mkubwa Camp, which lies at an altitude of around 2,750 meters. The name “Mti Mkubwa” translates to “Big Tree,” referencing the massive trees that characterize this area. It’s a relatively short day, offering trekkers a gentle introduction to the mountain’s diverse ecosystems, with a peaceful atmosphere ideal for acclimatization and relaxation on the first night.

Accommodations: Mti Mkubwa Camp

The trek from Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp is a beautiful stretch on the Lemosho Route of Kilimanjaro. From Mti Mkubwa, trekkers continue their ascent through the forest zone and begin to enter the heath and moorland regions, with the trail offering stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. The path gradually climbs to Shira 1 Camp (approximately 3,600 meters), which is set in a plateau-like area near the Shira Ridge. This camp is often the first place where trekkers begin to experience the vast, open landscapes of Kilimanjaro, with views of the Shira Plateau and the looming peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. The altitude and environment make it an excellent spot for acclimatization, providing a peaceful, high-altitude setting for the night.

➔Accommodations: Shira 1 Camp

The trek from Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp is a scenic and gradual ascent along the Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro. This section of the trail offers breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau, with rocky terrain and occasional patches of alpine desert. As trekkers move higher, the landscape opens up, and you’ll begin to see more expansive vistas of the mountain and surrounding areas.

The route to Shira 2 Camp (approximately 3,850 meters) is about a 3-5 hour walk, with a steady climb that allows for proper acclimatization. Once at the camp, trekkers are rewarded with stunning views of the Shira Ridge and the distant peak of Kilimanjaro

Accommodations: Shira 2 Camp

The trek from Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower, and then descending to Barranco Camp, is an important and challenging section of the Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro, often referred to as the “climb high, sleep low” strategy to aid acclimatization.

After spending some time at Lava Tower, you begin the descent toward Barranco Camp (3,960 meters), which is a challenging part of the trek. The descent is steep but necessary for acclimatization, as it helps to avoid altitude sickness by allowing trekkers to “climb high, sleep low.” The trail descends through a valley with scenic views and a variety of landscapes, from rocky terrain

Accommodations: Barranco Camp

The trek from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp is a relatively short but steep section of the Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro. The path begins with the ascent of the iconic Barranco Wall, a challenging scramble that requires both hands and feet. The wall is not technically difficult but can be physically demanding, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape as you climb.

Once at the top of the Barranco Wall, the trail levels out briefly, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys and the majestic peak of Kilimanjaro. From here, the trek continues through rocky terrain and alpine meadows as you make your way toward Karanga Camp (approximately 4,000 meters).

➔Accommodations: Karanga Camp

The trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp is an important leg of the Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro, as it brings trekkers closer to the summit. This section typically takes around 4-5 hours, covering a distance of approximately 6 kilometers.

The trail begins with a steady climb through alpine desert terrain, with rocky paths and sparse vegetation. As you ascend, the landscape becomes more barren and windswept, offering dramatic views of the surrounding valleys and the towering summit of Kilimanjaro. The altitude gain is significant, bringing the trekkers to Barafu Camp at around 4,680 meters.

Accommodations: Barafu Camp

Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. It is the ultimate destination for those climbing Kilimanjaro, offering a sense of accomplishment as climbers reach the roof of Africa. The peak is located on the Kilimanjaro summit plateau, accessible through several trekking routes, including the Lemosho, Machame, and Marangu routes.

Reaching Uhuru Peak is a challenging and rewarding feat, requiring determination, physical endurance, and proper acclimatization. The journey to the summit typically begins in the early hours of the morning, around midnight or 1 a.m., to allow climbers to reach the peak at sunrise, when the views are most spectacular.

Accommodations: Milleniun Camp

After reaching Uhuru Peak, the descent back to Moshi marks the end of your Kilimanjaro trek. Upon descending, trekkers usually stay a night or two in Moshi to rest and recover from the trek, before heading off to their next adventure.
