Itinerary

Arrival Day: Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi

Welcome to your adventure with African Landscape Adventure! Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our warm and welcoming representative will be there to greet you. From there, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Moshi, located at an elevation of 890m (2,920ft).

Once you’ve settled in, you’ll meet your guide for an informative climb briefing. This session will outline the details of your upcoming trek, ensuring you’re fully prepared for the challenge ahead. We’ll also conduct a thorough equipment check to confirm that you have all the necessary gear for a safe and successful climb. Should anything be missing, we offer the option to rent or purchase additional equipment at our store.

The remainder of the day is yours to relax, explore Moshi, and mentally prepare for the journey. Enjoy a comfortable overnight stay at your hotel, allowing you to rest and acclimate to the local environment before your adventure begins.

Elevation: 2389m (7838ft) to 2785m (9137ft)
Altitude Gained: 396m

Your adventure begins with a 3-hour drive from Moshi, taking you through charming mountainside villages en route to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Upon arrival, we’ll wait for our permits to be processed while observing the lively activity of various climbing crews preparing for their ascent. As you begin your trek, enjoy the stunning rainforest surroundings and the winding trails. Your guide will share insights into the local flora, fauna, and wildlife. The trail at these lower elevations can be muddy and slippery, so we highly recommend wearing gaiters and using trekking poles for added stability.

Elevation: 2785m (9,137ft) to 3895m (12,779ft)
Altitude Gained: 1110m

After a restful night and a nourishing breakfast, we depart the rainforest and begin our ascent. As we leave the forest behind, the trail steadily climbs, offering expansive views as we reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. The temperature begins to drop as we move higher, and the rugged beauty of Kilimanjaro unfolds before us.

Elevation: 3895m (12,779ft) to 3986m (13,077ft)
Altitude Gained: 91m

While you will end the day at a similar elevation to where you started, this day plays a crucial role in your acclimatization process. From Shira Plateau, we head east up a ridge, passing the junction leading to Kibo Peak before continuing southeast towards the Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev. 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, we arrive at a second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier. Afterward, we descend to Barranco Camp, where we’ll overnight, preparing for the next stage of the climb.

Elevation: 3986m (13,077ft) to 4034m (13,253ft)
Altitude Gained: 48m

After breakfast, we begin the climb up a steep ridge towards the exhilarating Barranco Wall. From there, we descend into the Karanga Valley and reach the junction that connects to the Mweka Trail. This day offers one of the most impressive views, as you witness the strength, agility, and skill of your crew navigating the Barranco Wall with remarkable ease. You’ll spend the night at Karanga Camp, surrounded by the beauty of the mountain.

Elevation: 4034m (13,253ft) to 4662m (15,295ft)
Altitude Gained: 628m

Today, we continue our ascent towards Barafu Camp, where we complete the South Circuit. This section offers a stunning variety of views of the summit from multiple angles, each more breathtaking than the last. Once at Barafu Camp, enjoy an early dinner and rest as we prepare for the challenging summit night ahead. Overnight at Barafu Camp, where you’ll gather strength for the final push to the peak.

Elevation: 4662m (15,295ft) to 5895m (19,341ft)
Altitude Gained: 1233m
Descent to: 3090m (10,150ft)
Altitude Lost: 2789m

As the excitement builds, an early start between midnight and 2 a.m. marks the beginning of the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek. We make our way towards the summit, passing between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, braving the cold while focusing on the incredible accomplishment that awaits.

With a series of switchbacks, we ascend through the scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. Here, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning sunrise during a brief rest. For those who hike at a faster pace, the sunrise might be enjoyed from the summit itself. From Stella Point, it’s a final 1-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, where you will likely encounter snow along the way.

Congratulations! One step at a time, you’ve reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent. After photos, celebrations, and possibly a few tears of joy, take a moment to appreciate this incredible achievement.

The journey continues with a steep descent to Mweka Camp, where we’ll stop at Barafu Camp for lunch and a quick rest. We recommend gaiters and trekking poles to navigate the loose gravel and volcanic ash terrain. After a challenging but rewarding day, enjoy a well-deserved rest as you spend your final evening on the mountain. Overnight at Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 3106m (10,190ft) to 1633m (5,358ft)
Altitude Lost: 1473m

After a fulfilling breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation with your crew, it’s time to bid farewell. Begin your descent to Mweka Park Gate, where you will receive your well-earned summit certificates. The terrain here is steep, wet, and muddy, with the warmer weather making it a challenging but rewarding final stretch. We highly recommend wearing gaiters and using trekking poles for added comfort and stability.

Upon reaching the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka Village and transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, approximately a 30-minute drive. Once at the hotel, enjoy a refreshing hot shower and a delicious dinner, marking the conclusion of your Lemosho Route 7-Day Kilimanjaro Trek with African Landscape Adventure.
